At PRO Martial Arts Waterloo, we focus on bullying awareness and prevention every week of the year but are happy to see this as a focus for Ontario schools during the third week of November every year. During this time, “Ontario students, school staff and parents are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being.”. We are excited to find out what Kitchener-Waterloo schools do during this week to help kids understand bullying and what to do about it.
Bullying is a serious problem and it is great to see activity growing to help educate and prevent. The Canadian Institute for Health Research presents some startling statistics:
- At least 1 in 3 adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied recently
- Canada has the 9th highest rate of bullying in the 13 years old category on a scale of 35 countries
- 47% of Canadian parents report having a child victim of bullying
You may not know that the Waterloo PRO Martial Arts location is a part of a network of Canadian and US locations that all share this common focus. The Grand Master who developed PRO Martial Arts got into martial arts because he was bullied himself. Grand Master Ed Samane was bullied starting in the fifth grade because of his weight and martial arts helped him gain the confidence so that bullies would leave him alone. Now through his programming, thousands of kids are engaged every week to help them have the self-confidence to stand up to bullying and speak up when they see other kids being bullied.
If you are a local teacher who would like some help with this topic at your school, please feel free to contact us because we love to help where we can. We find that our black belt instructors are able to make the topic engaging with kids on a weekly basis and have successfully done so in schools as well.
